There are exceptions, but basically, if you're on base and the ball is kicked in the air, you should take at least a few steps towards the next base. (And you should go about halfway between bases if the ball is going to land far away.) Doing so gives you plenty of time to get back to the bag if the ball is caught. And if the player drops the ball (which, let's face it, happens a lot in kickball), you already have a head start to the next base.<br /><br />The big exception is if you're on third base and there's a relatively short fly ball (like, in shallow right field).
